Cash-strapped Air India has outstanding dues of Rs 2500 crore to oil marketing companies and owes about Rs 1200 crore to airports, Chairman Rohit Nandan told reporters on Wednesday.

Rail Budget: Train fares hiked across classes first time in 10 yrs

Rail Budget: Train fares hiked across classes first time in 10 yrs

Source: moneycontrol

Train travel just got costlier! Minister Dinesh Trivedi has announced a hike in passenger fares for the first time in 10 years. Second class passenger fares have been upped by 2 paise per kilometre while sleeper class fares are up 5 paise per kilometer.
AC fares too see a hike by 10 paise per kilometer. First AC ticket is now expensive by 10 paise while second AC is costlier by 30 paise.
Platform tickets will now on cost Rs 5 instead of the Rs 3.
Trivedi says that the fee hike is not very steep and passengers will not be impacted much. A second class mail or express passenger travelling 375 km will, in essence, have to bear an additional cost of only Rs 12 and that for a 750 km journey by sleeper class on mail or express train will cost him only Rs 40 more than what he is currently paying.
Trivedi also introduced 96 new trains as part of the 12th plan. His list includes introduction of 75 new Express trains and 21 passenger trains, besides 75 new services in Mumbai suburban rail network, 50 new services in Kolkata suburban rail network and 15 in Chennai suburban rail network.

Rail Budget 2012-13: Will Dinesh Trivedi lose his job for hiking fares

Source: Moneycontrol

Soon after Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi announced fare hikes in his maiden Railway Budget speech, he stirred the hornet's nest aka Trinamul Congress which may cost him his job. It is not known if he had kept his boss Mamata Banerjee under loop, but two key TMC members Sudip Bandopadhyay and Derek O'Brien have raised an objection saying the decision to hike fares were Trivedi's own.
Mamata Banerjee is known to have opposed all moves to raise fares or prices, but it is difficult to comprehend that she was kept in the dark as far as hiking Railway fares was concerned. Experts say it may be an orchestrated drama on behalf of the party. But in an exclusive conversation with CNN-IBN, Mamata Banerjee said the party was not consulted and a decision on Dinesh Trivedi will be taken up by the parliamenatry board.
It all started with Mr Brien tweeting "What's up with fare hikes" while Bandopadhyay alleged that party was not consulted at all. TMC sources said there was a pressure from finance minister Pranab Mukherjee to hike fares and now the party may ask Trivedi to rollback hikes. In his defence, the Railway minister said he had taken a conscious decision for the benefit of the country.
